At Greatwood, all children have the opportunity to take part in a range of sports. We ensure that the children are given as many opportunities to try new sports as well as more traditional sports.
We believe that it is important to give our children more responsibility for sport at school. We do this by running the Playmaker and Young Whistler courses each year.
Competition is a key element of our focus for sport and we take part in all local competitions as well as events further afield! Teaching our children how to be good sportsmen and women is also key to our Greatwood sporting values.
We know that our children and their families enjoy sport here at Greatwood, this page is just a small window into the Greatwood sporting opportunities that are on offer!
This year we have changed our approach to school swimming (for the better!)
-We now swim every week of the year
-We swim for a full hour every week (we used to swim for half an hour!)
-Only 30 children swim at once (we used to have 60 swimmers at a time!)
-Our very own Mrs Bealey and Mrs Robinson (who are swimming teachers too) also go swimming with us (we now have 5 teachers, not 3!)
-We also save £250 a week by using our own school minibus rather than hiring an expensive coach!
The quality of our swimming provision at Greatwood has been described by a leading sports teacher as ‘Outstanding!’ And Steve (head of swimming) from Craven Leisure said It wish other schools would learn from this approach!”
In September 2019 one of our Year 6 boys was terrified of even going to the swimming pool building! By week 4 he swam a width, by week 11 he swam a length!
97% of our Year 6 children met the expected standard and 53% exceeded the standard.
In the Spring term Y5 will swim weekly and Y4 in the Summer term. We hope in future years that we can move lower down the school!
Every day all children at Greatwood spend 15 minutes on our Active Track. They can walk, jog, run or sprint. The children set themselves their own daily targets and aim to achieve them.
Our staff members have also been taking part in the sessions.
The children decided that when they achieve 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 miles that they will receive certificates in celebration assembly.
There are track rules, again chosen by the children themselves.
Mrs Yeoman managed to secure funding from the North Yorkshire Sugar Tax fund. After months of planning building work for our active track finally started on the 9th September.
We cannot wait for the track to be completed, we will walk, jog or run for 15 minutes EVERY day!
Here is the progress so far:
What a fantastic trip! Along with Carleton and The Skipton Academy we took 42 children to see the Lionesses play Germany.
The atmosphere was incredible and the behaviour of the children was impeccable.
We saw Ellen White score for England and then met two of the ex Lionesses after the match in the VIP area; Claire Rafferty and Karen Carney.
A huge THANK YOU to Miss Hoggarth for organising the trip and to Mrs Hoggarth and Mrs Yeoman for taking us.
Every week we take part in horse riding lessons at Draughton Riding Centre. We are working towards achieving a certificate in animal care. We spend half an hour in the classroom and half an hour putting what we have learnt into practise.
On the 5th November we set off early to Dalby Forest. We took 8 runners to compete in the North Yorkshire X country finals. These runners had already successfully been in the top 10 runners in the Craven event and then in the top 8 at the Giggleswick event.
Well done to Jessica who represented us in the Y4 girls event. Jessica came in 20th position.
Well done to Harry who represented us in the Y4 boys event. Harry came in 40th position.
Isabelle, Minnie, Oskar and Libby ran in the inclusion event and all finished in the top 10 with smiles on their faces.
Our success story of the event was Riley, who for the first year has been interested in running! Riley’s mum and dad were both there to see Riley cross the finish line in 3rd position. Look how proud he looks with his medal!
Yorkshire Sports Awards
We are absolutely thrilled to have been named Yorkshire’s 2019 winners for ‘Increased Participation in Competitive Sports.’ We are proud that all 250 children here at Greatwood took part in a sporting event this year.
Over 70 people were invited to our annual sports celebration evening, where Mrs Hoggarth (Head of Sports) Mrs Smurthwaite (Head of PE) Miss Hoggarth (SSCo) and Mr Magee (Head of Outdoor Ed) awarded lots of different trophies, medals and certificates.
A huge evening to celebrate all of our sporting achievements for the Year 2018-2019.
Dalby Forest 26/3/19
Today 10 children were chosen to represent the Craven district at a county event at Dalby Forest. The event included Nordic walking, orienteering, laser quest, archery and cycling. We had a fabulous day and represented our district to the highest level.
The Scarabis Table Tennis Cup
On the 14th March our Table Tennis Team competed in the Scarabis Cup. All players competed in an individual and a team competition. The standard of competitors was extremely high and there were some nail biting rallies.
A huge THANK YOU to Miss Hoggarth and Mr Gower for another fabulous competition.
Greatwood Dance Festival 19.2.19
Today we invited over 200 children from different local schools to Greatwood. Howard from Fire House Dance delivered a fantastic dance festival. Here are just some of the photographs from the amazing event...
Regional Schools Athletics Finals 17.02.19
Today we travelled to Halifax to the finals of the Regional Athletics Competition. Hollie and Lennon competed in both track and field events against some of Yorkshire’s finest athletes.
Wednesday 6th February 2019
Mrs Yeoman drew a hopscotch outside the KS1 entrance this morning. We couldn’t resist, children, parents and even grandparents hopscotched their way into school!
Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd January saw our KS2 children taking part in three swimming galas at Craven Pool. Our swimmers competed at varying levels of ability from an aqua-splash event for beginners to a competition to see which swimmers from Craven were the ‘fastest’ in each stroke.
As always, the sheer enjoyment that our children get from taking part in such fantastic events is difficult to describe. But in their own words the event has been: ‘really fun’ (Isabelle)
‘The swimmers were so fast, I couldn’t believe I won!’
(James) and ‘our children are a credit to Greatwood’ (Mrs Smith.)
Once again a huge THANKYOU goes to Katie Hoggarth for organising such a fabulous event.
Our Dance Troop went to the North Yorkshire Schools Dance Festival. They danced confidently in front of an audience of over 1000 people.
What a fabulous day and an absolute pleasure to see so many children and young adults smiling and celebrating what they love...TO DANCE
Thank you to Mrs Yeoman and Mr Gower for taking us to York.
On Saturday 7th January we took 50 children to Old Trafford. Manchester UTD played against Reading in the FA Cup. The final score was 2-0.
Experiencing a ‘match day’ is always a fantastic experience, but when it’s at Old Trafford the atmosphere is even more electric!
Our children enjoyed the whole experience and sang brilliantly.
It is always a pleasure when staff at a venue comment on the behaviour and attitudes of our children.
Thank you to Mrs Hoggarth, Mr Magee, Mr Gower, Miss Hoggarth, Mr Speight and Mrs Yeoman for taking us.
Children in Year 6 have the opportunity to take part in Playmaker, a Sports Leaders programme, which involves taking part in a series of workshops throughout the year developing their leadership skills.
The Playmakers deliver a wide range of sporting activities to children throughout the school.
